Nola Tech handled the online course platform design for EMMRCEM, an English-language learning platform for emergency doctors preparing for the MRCEM exam. Our team built it on WordPress with Tutor LMS for courses, WooCommerce for the cart and Elementor for page design, so lessons, question banks, registration and payment all live in one mobile-friendly site.

About the Client: EMMRCEM

EMMRCEM works in medical education, specifically preparing doctors for the MRCEM, the emergency medicine membership exam. The project is tied to the United Kingdom, while the platform’s audience of doctors is spread across different countries, which is why the whole platform is in English.

The client sells paid educational content organised by exam stage: MRCEM Primary, MRCEM Intermediate and MRCEM OSCE. That content includes recorded lectures, live sessions, question banks and mock exams. In other words, the content itself is the product, and that shaped every decision about the platform from day one.

The Challenge: Paid Medical Content With No Single Home

A doctor preparing for MRCEM usually jumps between Telegram groups, scattered files and different question websites, and struggles to see how far they have come in the syllabus or where their weak spots are. EMMRCEM wanted to bring everything into one place, and set out a clear brief for Nola Tech:

  • One home for every content type: recorded lectures, live sessions, question banks and mock exams inside one organised structure.
  • Separate exam stages: a page for each stage (Primary, Intermediate and OSCE) so students can pick the right course without contacting the team first.
  • Clear registration and payment for an international audience: a purchase path with no manual step on the client’s side.
  • Protected paid content: limits on copying and unauthorised sharing, because the content is what students pay for.
  • A comfortable mobile experience: many doctors study in short bursts between shifts, so the platform had to work well on small screens.

How Nola Tech Built the EMMRCEM Online Course Platform

We treated the project as a complete learning system rather than a brochure site, and split the work into stages covering the technical foundation, the student experience and the sales path.

1. Learning management system (LMS)

Nola Tech used WordPress with the Tutor LMS plugin to manage courses and lessons, giving the client’s team a clear dashboard for adding and organising lessons inside each course. We then created three standalone course pages, MRCEM Primary, MRCEM Intermediate and MRCEM OSCE, each showing its lesson count and level.

2. Registration and payment

  • Courses connected to a WooCommerce cart.
  • Payment through PayPal, suited to an audience in many countries.
  • Sign-in with a Google account to cut down on account-creation steps.
  • A three-step path shown on the homepage: choose a course, add it to the cart and pay via PayPal, then get instant access.

3. Student experience and dashboard

We set up a student dashboard for tracking scores and weak areas, as presented by the platform, along with browser notifications for new activity and a chat widget that opens WhatsApp or email when a student needs help.

4. Pages that support the buying decision

  • A “Demo” page with content samples before subscribing.
  • An FAQ page and a contact page.
  • A homepage that explains how studying works before purchase: question banks and recalls, weekly Zoom sessions and a recorded library, mock exams and a performance dashboard, plus student testimonials.
  • Footer reference links to bodies such as RCEM Learning and the Resuscitation Council UK, as well as exam dates and fees.

5. Content protection

Text selection and copying are blocked across the platform to reduce leaks of paid material while keeping reading natural for subscribed students.

This kind of project sits within Nola Tech’s website design and development service, with extra attention to UI/UX design, since students spend hours inside the platform.

Tech Stack

  • WordPress: the core platform.
  • Tutor LMS: courses, lessons and the student dashboard.
  • WooCommerce: cart and checkout.
  • Elementor: page design.
  • PayPal and Google sign-in: payment and quick access.

Results: Three Exam Tracks on One Platform

The figures below come from the live site, emmrcem.com, as reviewed on October 11, 2026:

  • 230 lessons in the MRCEM Intermediate course.
  • 76 lessons in the MRCEM Primary course.
  • 16 lessons in the OSCE course, announced as coming soon.
  • 3 course tracks offered on the platform.

A doctor can now move from the homepage to a course page, pay via PayPal without any manual contact, and go straight into the content with their own account or a Google account. Because the platform runs on Tutor LMS, the team can add new lessons and courses, such as the OSCE track, within the same structure without rebuilding the site. You can visit the EMMRCEM platform to see it live.

Lessons for E-Learning Businesses

  • Organise content around the student’s goal: when an exam has stages, a dedicated page per stage saves students time and cuts repetitive questions to your team.
  • Make buying fully self-service: every manual step between choosing a course and accessing it adds delay and can cost you a student, especially across time zones.
  • Show a sample before you sell: a demo page gives visitors a real sense of content quality, one of the strongest persuaders for paid learning.
  • Design for mobile first: if your audience is busy professionals, most study sessions will be short and on a phone.
  • Pick a system that scales: a solid LMS lets you add courses without rebuilding the whole platform.

FAQ: Online Course Platform Design

How long does it take to build a course platform like EMMRCEM?

It depends on the number of courses, the types of content, payment methods and extra features such as dashboards and notifications. Nola Tech sets the timeline once the requirements are clear; our website design pricing page is a good starting point.

Can an online course platform connect to payment gateways?

Yes. For EMMRCEM, courses were connected to a WooCommerce cart with PayPal checkout. The right gateway depends on each platform’s audience and market.

Can paid lessons be protected from copying?

You can reduce copying and unauthorised sharing by limiting content to registered subscribers and blocking text selection and copying, as was done on this project.
